It seems like the Kentucky Basketball coaching staff has their eyes on two potential targets to round out the roster for the upcoming season, but who will it be: Jaxon Kohler or Mark Mitchell?
Kohler has been drawing some buzz lately, as Kentucky reportedly had a 2.5-hour Zoom call with the Michigan State transfer yesterday evening. According to Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jack Pilgrim, the call went “as good as it could’ve gone.”
BYU has been seen as the frontrunner for Kohler, and the talented forward had a meeting with the Cougars coaching staff yesterday evening as well.
Of course, Kentucky has also been mentioned as the team to watch when it comes to Missouri transfer Mark Mitchell, who has a pending eligibility case in court in Kentucky. A ruling on that case is expected in the next day or two.
Kohler or Mitchell would be major additions to the Kentucky Basketball roster, especially this late in the offseason.
Kohler was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention at Michigan State last season, finishing second on the team in scoring with 12.5 points per game to go along with a team-high 8.9 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the floor, nearly 39 percent from deep, and about 87 percent from the free-throw line. Kohler would help address some concerns about rebounding while also providing the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting ability.
Mitchell did it all for Missouri last season, leading the team in points, rebounds, and assists. Mitchell was one of the top scorers in the SEC at 18.3 points per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists. Mitchell shot 54.7 percent from the floor to go along with 38.8 percent from three and about 67 percent from the free-throw line. Mitchell has the ability to lead the team in scoring on any given night, and is a guy you can give the ball to and make a play.
Either of these players would elevate this Kentucky team tremendously, but it’s very important Kentucky lands one of them. Reports are that Kohler is looking to pick a school very soon, even as early as today, so this doesn’t seem to be a process that will linger.
