Kentucky Wildcats News: Mark Pope pushes back against traditional GM role

Good morning, BBN!

Well, it’s never really been a secret, but Mark Pope went on Field of 68 and officially gave his take on why Kentucky hasn’t gone the GM route:

“I’m not against the GM model; I just think our model’s better.”

The Kentucky head coach believes the Wildcats’ current front-office structure gives the program something even better: Multiple people bringing their expertise to roster construction.

Rather than handing personnel decisions to one GM, Kentucky divides responsibilities among a four-person front office.

Keegan Brown focuses on data and roster construction, Nick Robinson handles salary-cap strategy, Kevin Sergent oversees compliance, contracts and legal matters, while Kim Shelton works with NIL and corporate sponsorships.

Pope also wants his assistant coaches heavily involved in recruiting, negotiations and roster decisions rather than having their influence diminished by a GM sitting above them.

The results last year, minus the injuries, of course, didn’t seem to work out.

There’s been a lot of hype behind this year’s team, and they did have one of the best portal classes in the country.

Ultimately, we’ll see after this season. It’s a massive year for Pope, and he’s putting his “our model’s better” mindset to the test.
