Aston Martin has spent the bulk of the 2026 campaign aggressively trying to out-develop their midfield rivals, but according to Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack, the paddock hasn’t even seen the full potential of their latest machinery.
Following a weekend of solid chassis progress at the Dutch Grand Prix, Krack told the media that his engineering team is still actively learning how to extract the maximum lap time out of their heavily revised aerodynamic package.
Aston Martin’s Budapest B-Spec GambleThe core of Aston Martin’s recent performance surge traces back to a massive 16-part upgrade rolled out during the Hungarian Grand Prix. This package, which featured a completely reprofiled floor, revised sidepod inlets, and a slender nose, was a fundamental shift in their aerodynamic philosophy designed to support the underfloor airflow. The team followed that up at Zandvoort with even more aerodynamic tweaks to the front wing, diffuser, and floor fences to expand the car’s operating window.
However, bolting on a completely new aerodynamic concept rarely translates to instant lap time without meticulous trackside tuning. Krack pointed directly to the steep learning curve associated with these sweeping changes.
“Yeah, I mean we get to know this package more and more,” Krack told the media. “I think we said with the large package that we introduced in Budapest, it will take some sessions to learn how to deal with it and to learn how to set it up.”
With the intense pressure of a race weekend, dialing in the setup for a new aerodynamic baseline is a complex puzzle. “If you have changes that are of this large scale with the intensity of the sessions, it’s always difficult to get the maximum out of it all the time, and the more sessions we get, the more we will get it under control,” Krack admitted.
The Power Unit PuzzleThe chassis aerodynamics are only half of the equation Aston Martin is currently trying to solve. The team also integrated a brand new Honda Spec 2 power unit at the Dutch Grand Prix. This fresh engine hardware requires its own extensive period of fine-tuning to ensure the electrical deployment perfectly matches the mechanical grip out of traction zones.
Krack revealed that the exact same setup philosophy applies to the engine side of the garage. “And the same goes actually also for the introduction of the power unit now,” he explained. “We need to learn how to use it, we need to learn how to optimize it, and I think that is it’s going to take us a couple of events, but it was a good step forward.”
Positive Cockpit ValidationAs the engineers in the garage crunch the telemetry to sync the new floor characteristics with the hybrid delivery, the most important validation is finally coming directly from the drivers. Throughout the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, the team radio communications featured highly positive feedback from the cockpit regarding the car’s overall balance.
Krack acknowledged this crucial shift in tone, attributing it directly to the trackside team gaining a better handle on the massive upgrade package. “Yeah, I mean it goes along with what I just said in terms of trying to understand the package,” he told the media.
While he cautioned that the development path won’t be perfectly linear, Krack remains highly optimistic about their trajectory. “But there were always, you know, there’s sessions where you will have a bit more difficulties, some others where it will be easier, and I think we had quite a good configuration this weekend,” Krack concluded.
