WNBA announcer calls out Caitlin Clark for ‘stat padding’

On Sunday night, Caitlin Clark had one of the most dominant games of the season to help lead her team to a 113-90 victory over the Dallas Wings. However, one longtime WNBA announcer was not impressed by what she saw from Clark on Sunday night.

While Clark may have put up 37 points in the win, one Phoenix Mercury announcer called her out for “stat padding” in the win because of the number of minutes she played.

Clark Was Dominant

After a disappointing finish on Saturday night against the New York Liberty, Clark bounced back in a big way on Sunday night, putting up 37 points and 10 assists to lead her team to the lopsided road win.

After the game, Clark said that she could tell it was going to be a good game before it even tipped off.

“Before the game started, you can ask coach Steph,” Clark said after the game. “I said, ‘It’s gonna be one of those nights.'”

Clark attributed the dominant performance to a good night’s sleep the night before as well as some good preparation.

“I think I just got some really good sleep at the hotel last night from 3 am to 11 am, so I got nice hours, woke up, watched some film, went through the scout and came to play.”

‘Miss Me With That Stat-Padding’

While it might have been a massive scoring outburst for Clark, longtime Phoenix Mercury announcer Cindy Brunson was not impressed as she called out the Fever star for “stat padding.”

Brunson compared Clark’s 37 points to the 32 points that Paige Bueckers scored for the Dallas Wings on the same night. She claimed that Bueckers was more impressive because she did it while on the court for just 26 minutes, while Clark was still in the game in the final minute even though the Fever were up by 20.

“Miss me with that stat padding 37 points, on the floor up 20 w/ a minute. The 32 points in just 26 minutes was WAY more impressive from the [star] on the playoff team from the lone star state,” Brunson wrote in a post on Threads.

Clark had 19 of her 37 points in the second half and hit her career-high eighth three-pointer of the night with 2:57 left on the clock to bring her scoring total to 37 points. That three-pointer gave Indiana a 16-point lead. She then left the game with 1:06 left. She played 32 minutes in the game.

Stat-padding or not, it was a dominant performance from Clark that helped lift her team to victory.
