Leeds United Target Rejected Twice By Premier League Club: Why The Whites Should Walk Away?

Leeds United’s pursuit of Mykhailo Mudryk is starting to look like a deal better left alone.

According to Isaac Johnson, Daniel Farke’s side have had two loan bids rejected by Chelsea, with the Premier League club unwilling to soften their financial demands or compromise over playing-time assurances. Strasbourg have also shown interest, although Mudryk’s preference is reportedly Leeds.

For all the excitement surrounding his name, there are some fairly hefty red flags here.

Leeds don’t need to force this one

Mudryk cost Chelsea £88.5 million. That figure still hangs over him, even though his spell at Stamford Bridge has hardly justified the price tag. There’s pace. Plenty of it. Directness, too, and an ability to attack space that would certainly give Leeds United another dimension on the left.

But football isn’t played on a spreadsheet. The Ukrainian hasn’t appeared in competitive football for around 20 months after receiving a doping suspension following a positive meldonium test. His ban ended on 31 July 2026 after a successful appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and he’s now back training with Chelsea under Xabi Alonso.

Training isn’t a Premier League match. Not even close.

Chelsea’s demands make little sense for Leeds United

Chelsea reportedly want a sizeable loan fee, a substantial contribution towards wages understood to be around £150,000 a week, and assurances over regular playing time. That last demand should make Leeds United think twice.

Farke has built a side where places are earned. Willy Gnonto works. Daniel James works. The pressing, running and defensive effort from his attackers isn’t optional. So why guarantee starts to a player who has barely kicked a ball competitively for nearly two years?

There’d be a settling-in period. Fitness questions. Rust. The sheer physical grind of the Premier League. Leeds would be paying heavily while taking on most of the risk.

Walking away would be the sensible call

There’s no argument against wanting a left winger. Leeds United could use another option there, particularly if injuries or fatigue start biting during a long campaign. Mudryk, though, doesn’t have to be that player.

Farke has already suggested Leeds won’t spend for the sake of spending. That’s the right approach. A multi-million-pound loan fee, inflated wages and no realistic long-term control over the player would be difficult to justify.

And if Chelsea won’t move? Walk away.

Leeds United aren’t short of ambition. They don’t need to prove it by taking a punt on a £88.5m flop simply because the name looks good on the team sheet.
