SPRINGFIELD—Liam Doyle, a promising left-handed pitcher for the Springfield Cardinals, has experienced a remarkable transformation during the Texas League season. Initially struggling with an earned run average (ERA) exceeding 6.00 from April to June, Doyle has turned things around dramatically since July, posting an impressive ERA of just 1.5.
The 22-year-old, who was selected in the first round of the 2025 draft out of the University of Tennessee, attributes his success to a focused approach and the guidance of his coaching staff. "Just the development standpoint that we were working through in the first half, it’s all starting to come together," Doyle explained. He emphasized the importance of becoming comfortable with his offspeed pitches, crediting the organizational pitching staff for their support throughout his journey.
A significant factor in Doyle's resurgence has been his ability to refine his pitching repertoire. He has worked diligently on his splitter, which has emerged as a key swing-and-miss pitch, contributing to a surge in strikeouts. "The splitter’s getting a lot better, which is a huge swing and miss pitch for me recently, getting a lot of punchouts on that, and it pairs well with my fastball," he noted. Doyle has also improved his slider and breaking balls, making them effective tools against both right-handed and left-handed hitters.
The results of his hard work are evident in his performance statistics; Doyle has accumulated 67 strikeouts over his last eight outings, showcasing his dominance on the mound. He draws inspiration from his childhood idol, Chris Sale, a three-time American League strikeout leader. "I loved watching Chris Sale, especially when he was with the Red Sox, growing up back home to go to his starts. Obviously, we’re two different pitchers. He’s a funky sidearm guy and I’m more over the top and try to blow people away, but just honestly to see his mentality and how long he’s been doing it in the MLB is the coolest part for me," Doyle shared.
Alongside Doyle's impressive performance, the entire Springfield roster has seen a resurgence in the second half of the season. The Cardinals have posted an outstanding record of 39-20, allowing them to secure the Texas League North Division title and a spot in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. This collective success has created a positive atmosphere for Doyle and his teammates.
"It’s pretty easy to pitch for this team," Doyle remarked. "You don’t have too much pressure. We score a ton of runs every game it feels like, and we have a ton of talent everywhere. A lot of the organization’s talent is right here in Springfield, so it’s really nice." With the playoffs approaching, Doyle's continued development and the Cardinals' overall performance will be crucial as they aim for success in the postseason.
