Louisville football has moved a future nonconference game to its season opener for the 2027 season, according to a report by FBSchedules.com.

The Cardinals will start next season by hosting Richmond on Aug. 28 at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium. The original date was set for Sept. 11.

The change comes after the NCAA voted to implement a uniform 14-week regular season beginning in 2027. Under the new format, FBS programs can begin most seasons during Week Zero, the weekend before Labor Day, and extend their schedules through Thanksgiving weekend. Kentucky has already moved two games against FCS foes to become season openers in 2027 and 2028.

This can allow teams to benefit from two bye weeks during the regular season.

Louisville opens the season the season against Ole Miss at Nissan Stadium in Nashville on Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

It is the only AP top-25 matchup during Week 1 of college football. The Cardinals are sitting at No. 24, while the Rebels are ranked No. 9.
