Michigan basketball has officially added Bertram "Buzzy" Caruthers to its coaching staff as the new director of player development. Although the program has yet to make a formal announcement, Caruthers' name is already listed in the University of Michigan athletics directory, signaling his integration into the team.
Caruthers comes to Michigan after a recent stint as an assistant coach at Ball State, where he was hired in 2024. His coaching experience also includes positions at Missouri State from 2022 to 2024 and Nebraska from 2019 to 2022, where he served as the director of player development. His diverse background in coaching at various levels of college basketball positions him well to contribute to the Wolverines' program.
The addition of Caruthers is part of a broader restructuring of Michigan's coaching staff. The Wolverines have also brought on board Mike Martin from Brown and Dylan Murphy from the Osceola Magic to fill the vacancies left by former coaches Justin Joyner, Drew Williamson, and Mike Boynton Jr., who was promoted to head coach earlier this summer, succeeding Dusty May.
A native of Kansas City, Caruthers began his coaching career at Barstow High School in Kansas City, where he worked from 2007 to 2011. He was instrumental in establishing the MoKan Elite program, which has gained recognition as one of the leading travel basketball programs in the country. Additionally, he spent a year at his alma mater, Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, further solidifying his commitment to player development.
As the Wolverines prepare for their upcoming international trip to Lithuania and Croatia from August 21 to 29, the timing of Caruthers' appointment is crucial. This trip will provide the coaching staff, including Caruthers, an opportunity to assess and develop the skills of the players in a competitive environment. Upon returning, Michigan will be just under two months away from its exhibition games, including a highly anticipated matchup against Houston at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on October 25.
The integration of Buzzy Caruthers into the Michigan basketball program reflects the team's commitment to enhancing player development and ensuring a successful season ahead. With a focus on building a strong coaching staff and preparing for challenging matchups, the Wolverines are poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
