Michigan's Trey McKenney, Moustapha Thiam out vs Lithuania with injuries

Michigan basketball will be down two starters for its matchup with Lithuania's B-team on Monday, Aug 24.

Shooting guard Trey McKenney and center Moustapha Thiam were not listed among the starters when the lineup came out shortly before tip off and a person with knowledge told the Free Press both "will sit out with minor injuries."

Quinn Costello and Oscar Goodman will start in their places.

Thiam left U-M's 96-84 loss to Lithuania on Sunday, when Elliot Cadeau went for a loose ball on an attempted offensive rebound and rolled up on Thiam's lower right leg, which appeared to hyperextend. Thiam went down in pain for a few moments before he was helped off the floor by Mike Boynton Jr. and trainer Chris Williams.

Thiam was impactful early and often in his Michigan debut. He caught a pocket pass from Cadeau and finished it off for a slam, got an offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer and made a midrange putback and drove to the hoop on a pick and roll with Cadeau when he threw down a slam, as he finished with six points, two rebounds and two assists in 5:54 of action.

The good news is this is not a significant injury, according to a person with knowledge of the injury who spoke on condition on anonymity because it hasn't been released publicly.

"Moustapha is fine," the Free Press was told. "Nothing serious."

McKenney's injury, for now, is undisclosed. The All-Big Ten freshman team member from a season ago scored 15 points on Sunday and went 3-for-6 on 3-pointers, but never got in a true rhythm as he battled foul trouble all afternoon, playing less than 21 minutes of gametime.

It's unclear what he injured, but the move to hold him out appears to be more precautionary than out of longterm concern. In any event, this will provide more invaluable reps for the freshmen and other players fighting for minutes.

U-M's first-year players, for the most part, were quite good in their debuts. Costello scored 17 points and hit five 3s and Brandon McCoy was fast and aggressive (at times a bit too fast, tying for a team-high with six turnovers) and scored 14 points.

Marcus Moller, a 7-foot-3 center from Denmark, flashed his range and scored seven points with five boards while Joseph Hartmann made several nice passes, drilled a step-back 3 and had a back-cut for a baseline slam as he finished with seven points, five assists and two boards.
