Mike Tomlin is going to consume and analyze football from a different lens in 2026 for the first time in over 19 years. The former Steelers head coach stepped down after a disappointing playoff loss to the Houston Texans and joined NBC’s football coverage, marking his first venture into sports broadcasting.
Tomlin will be a weekly panelist on Football Night in America and travel to various cities across the country with the team, including back to Pittsburgh on December 6, coincidentally against Houston. He joined Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s The Tonight Show on Monday, and it was easy to tell the enthusiasm Tomlin has for his new role.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been a novice,” Tomlin said. “I’ve got a little anxiety; I’m nervous. And that feels good. That performance anxiety, I feel good about it.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been a novice.”

Tomlin said he has butterflies for the year and was radiant with excitement. The coach who never had a losing season was replaced by Pittsburgh’s own Mike McCarthy as the team’s fourth coach since 1969.
Tomlin closed his Steelers career with a 193-114-2 record, a .628 winning percentage, and tied for the ninth most wins in NFL history. He tied four-time Super Bowl-winning coach Chuck Noll on the all-time list and tied for the most in franchise history.
