REPUBLIC — Keiran Govan saw himself more as a basketball player. He had dreams of suiting up at the next level.
During his freshman year, Govan spoke with Republic head coach Ryan Cornelsen. The football coach made it clear that this sport would change his life.
“He said, ‘This is your money maker. This is what’s going to get you to where you want to be in life,’” Govan recalled. “He wasn’t lying, and that really changed everything."
Govan is ready to lead Republic’s defense at the safety position. The Missouri commit has developed in Cornelsen’s system and has blossomed into one of the top prospects in the entire state.
“He’s got great character,” Cornelsen said. “At an early age, you could tell that he was going to be an outstanding football player. He should have another big year.”
As a safety, Govan thrives in this role. He enjoys helping his teammates and letting them thrive while cleaning up any messes that might occur.
“You’re basically the quarterback of the defense,” Govan said. “You got to know everything and know what everybody else is doing.”
Govan finished last season with 57 tackles and a team-high four interceptions. His athleticism jumps off the page, as does his ability to read opposing quarterbacks and find the ball in the air, challenging wide receivers.
“His junior year film was really good. When it got out to the coaches at the college level, it got a lot of attention quickly,” Cornelsen said. “When they got him on campus and saw his character, it just really blew up.”
Following last season, Govan secured 16 Division I scholarship offers. With big names like Alabama and Tennessee in the mix, one school stood out to the Republic native.
“They were the very first big, big offer,” Govan said.

Govan announced his commitment to Missouri in the spring. According to 24/7 Sports, he is the No. 8 ranked player in the state. He is also the fourth best defensive player, too.
He chose Missouri because of the relationships he built with head coach Eli Drinkwitz and his staff.
“It wasn’t just me connecting with them,” Govan said. “It was my whole family, and that’s what got me. I wanted a school who did not just want me, but wanted my family and everybody.”
Republic has some high expectations to begin the season. After last year’s 9-3 season, the Tigers are hoping for another big year led by their blue-chip secondary member.
For Govan, it’s one week at a time, not looking too far down the road.
“I’m worried about Week 1, then Week 2, and then Week 3,” Govan said. “I’m worried about getting our ways in the regular season, then going to win after.”
