Newcastle United has spent much of the summer searching for the right midfielder to rebuild around after losing Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, with seemingly a new name entering the conversation every few days.
Lucas Bergvall, Joao Palhinha, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Carlos Baleba and Nicolas Seiwald have all featured prominently in reports, but Newcastle looks to be on the verge of landing their midfielder of choice and the one to build around during the Matthias Jaissle era before the Sept. 1 deadline.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported on Tuesday that Newcastle is in talks to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with discussions already taking place over a potential transfer to the Tyneside club.
“Newcastle United are in talks to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez,” Ornstein reported. “The north east club are seeking midfield reinforcements this summer after the departures of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur and Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, and talks over a deal for Nico are among a number of exploratory conversations taking place.”
The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones echoed Ornstein’s report, confirming that Newcastle has held exploratory discussions with Manchester City and is “working on” a potential deal for Gonzalez, who joined City from Porto for €60 million (£52 million) in January 2025.
Before moving to Portugal, Gonzalez started his amateur and professional career at FC Barcelona, coming out of La Masia as a teenager and spending two seasons playing LaLiga football with both Barcelona and Valencia, the latter on loan.
Last season, Gonzalez made 41 appearances but found Premier League starts increasingly difficult to come by, starting only twice after January, but still racking up 1,567 minutes in 25 EPL games, scoring once.
Ornstein noted that the 24-year-old nevertheless publicly expressed his desire to remain at City earlier this month, although with his path to minutes highly blocked, a move away is reasonable.
Newcastle will immediately offer Gonzalez a major role as a starter and the leader of the new Magpies following the departures of its two established midfield stars. The club has signed teenagers Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba this summer, but neither represents an experienced replacement around whom Jaissle can immediately construct his midfield.
Although the talks remain exploratory and Gonzalez is not yet guaranteed to become Newcastle’s next signing, the fact that Ornstein is reporting the development is more than encouraging, and it should just be a matter of when, not if, the transfer is finally completed.
