GLEN DANIEL, WV (WVNS) - The Liberty Raiders have seemingly turned the corner in a big way this offseason, as they steadily increased their numbers ahead of preseason.
New Head Coach Jamie Newman takes over the reins at his alma mater’s program after back-to-back 3-7 seasons.
Newman is very experienced with this team. He coached some of the boys to an appearance in the Raleigh County Middle School championship game.
As he enters year 1 of coaching high school, Newman wants his program to balance being fierce, violent, and tough, while also competing with honor.
Battle of the Border 2026 gives local teams an early feel for Friday night lights“More energized than in times past. I think that these boys have put in a lot of work this offseason. I think they’re ready to turn the page. I think that they’re ready to start something new. I think they’re ready to start reclaiming an identity of Liberty football that they can be proud of,” said Newman.
Star Quarterback Jaxson Workman is returning to lead the way on offense and as a linebacker on defense.
“I feel like everybody’s goal is to win a state championship, but right now, we just want to win. So, I feel like if we work our butts off and just continue to focus on us – I feel like the wins will come,” added Workman.
The vibe is very high in the locker room right now, even though they are still adapting to Coach Newman’s system. The Liberty Coach shared their senior leadership is very strong coming into the season.
Workman thinks they have several players ready to make some noise this fall.
The Raiders kick off their season at home against Sherman on August 28, 2026.
