The Kansas City Chiefs are used to a certain amount of respect from oddsmakers and bettors.
After all, the team’s worst finish before last season with Patrick Mahomes as a starter was reaching the AFC Championship game. And before last season the Chiefs had won the AFC West every year with Mahomes as a starter (and 10 straight seasons overall). They had also gone over their win total in five of Mahomes’ first seven seasons as a starter.
But with Mahomes coming off a knee injury suffered in Week 15 last season, a rebuilt defense and questions among the offensive playmakers, it’s a different story this offseason in Kansas City.
The Chiefs are currently 16-1 to win the Super Bowl at sportsbooks, the team’s longest preseason odds to win it all since Kansas City was 30-1 heading into Mahomes’ first year as a starting QB in 2018. It’s also the first time since 2018 that Kansas City hasn’t had at least the fourth-best preseason Super Bowl odds. The New England Patriots (+600) were the favorite that preseason, and the Chiefs at 30-1 were tied for the 13th-best odds.
Kansas City is among the top-five most-bet teams to win the Super Bowl at several sportsbooks, but isn’t among the top liabilities. It will be interesting to see if betting interest picks up if the Chiefs get out to a fast start (Kansas City is a favorite in its first four games before a Week 5 bye).
The Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens (10-1) have the best odds to win the Super Bowl among AFC teams, followed by the Chiefs and last season’s AFC champion New England Patriots at 16-1.
