Oklahoma and Brent Venables agree to new contract

Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables is set to stay in Norman for the foreseeable future.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Oklahoma and Venables have agreed to a new six-year deal with an average annual value of $10.5 million. It adds two years to his current contract and goes through 2031.

Venables is entering his fifth season as Oklahoma’s head coach after leading the program to the College Football Playoff in 2025. Oklahoma made the CFP with a 10-2 record and secured the No. 8 seed before falling to No. 9 seed Alabama in the first round, 34-24.

Venables has compiled two 10-win seasons in four years and has a 32-20 overall record. He took over as the defensive playcaller last season and had one of the top defenses in the country. The Sooners finished seventh in scoring defense and sixth in total defense.

The Sooners will now try to return to the CFP this year and make a deeper run. They’ll start their 2026 campaign on Sept. 4 against the UTEP Miners before facing off against the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor on Sept. 12.

Kickoff between the Sooners and Miners will be at 8 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
