The cuts have begun.

The Patriots entered this weekend with 91 players on their roster. Mike Vrabel’s team must be down to 53 players by Sunday at 6 p.m. These next 48 hours mark one of the busiest times in the NFL, with all teams making dozens of roster moves.

For the Patriots, it’s only the beginning. Their 53-man roster will constantly change throughout the season. After making cuts this weekend, the Patriots will put together their first practice squad by Monday.

Soon enough, the Patriots will be in Seattle for their Week 1 matchup.

Here’s a look at whom the Patriots have started to cut:

Patriots trade for running back

On a day when the Patriots are cutting down their roster, they also acquired some help.

According to ESPN, the Patriots have traded for running back Corey Kiner in a deal with the Arizona Cardinals for a 2028 seventh-round draft pick.

This move signals the Patriots didn’t love how the competition for their No. 3 running back unfolded. Kiner played in four games last season, rushing for 58 yards on 12 carries. He also caught two passes for 15 yards and returned one kickoff for 22 yards.

Lan Larison and Hassan Haskins had been battling for the No. 3 running back job.

Now, it could become Kiner’s job. This preseason, Kiner ran for 180 yards with two touchdowns in three games. The 24-year-old joined Arizona last season as an undrafted free agent. He ran for 1,153 yards with four touchdowns for Cincinnati in 2024.

Before landing with the Cardinals, Kiner signed with San Francisco but was waived after suffering an ankle injury. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings practice squad and then signed with the Cardinals active roster in December.

This move also means the Patriots must cut another player.

Veteran edge rusher

According to a source, the Patriots are releasing veteran edge rusher Jesse Luketa. He played in 10 games and made two starts last season in Arizona.

Roster update

At 1 p.m., the Patriots have cut 15 players. They have 23 more roster moves to make before they get to 53.

Defensive backs cut

According to a source, the Patriots are releasing safety Eric Butler with an injury designation. They are also cutting safety Peter Manuma, per source.

A source told MassLive’s Karen Guregian, the team is also cutting cornerback Marcellus Dial. That means the entire 2024 Patriots draft class is down to one player: Drake Maye.

According to the Boston Herald, the Patriots are releasing guard Jon’Darius Morgan, guard Darrian Dalcourt and center Jacob Ritzy.
