The PONY League World Series championship game in Washington County has been canceled.
Officials announced the cancellation Wednesday afternoon, following days of inclement weather that had already forced the tournament into a single-elimination conclusion.
In a social media post, PONY World Series said volunteers have spent “countless hours” repairing and preparing the field, though repeated rainfall has rendered it “unplayable.”
“In nearly 75 years of the PONY League World Series, we have never faced circumstances that prevented us from completing the tournament as scheduled,” the post reads. “We recognize how difficult this is for everyone, especially the players who have worked and competed all summer for the opportunity to be here.”
PONY World Series says alternative venues have been considered. However, nearby turf fields don’t meet PONY specifications for tournament play, and the rain has impacted grass fields.
Rescheduling would not have been reasonable, given the cost families would face for lodging and travel, officials say.
Wednesday night’s championship game would have pitted Washington County up against Chinese Taipei, the only two undefeated teams.
