Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams will undoubtedly be the most important player for the team's success in the 2026 season, and working with new offensive coordinator Press Taylor will be an important relationship.
Taylor, who served as passing game coordinator with Chicago last season, takes over as the offensive coordinator in the Bears after Declan Doyle departed after one season with the team to serve as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Going into his second season under head coach Ben Johnson's offense, there will be a significant focus on how Williams evolves in the offense and what steps he takes in his own development.
Williams made a huge leap from his rookie to sophomore season, but still has plenty of room for improvement, including raising his completion percentage. Taylor believes that the young quarterback is getting closer to mastering the playbook, but has yet to commit to him playing in any preseason games this year.
"He's getting closer every day to improving in his mastery of the system," Taylor said. "I don't know if he's ever going to get there, I don't know that anybody ever will. We as coaches continue to learn more about the system and where it can go. In terms of playing in a preseason game, that's a case-by-case basis. We won't make any definitive statements today on game two or game three because we want to see what the week entails. If we get good work and are confident, then maybe they won't play. If we want to see a little bit more, we reserve the right to make that decision when the time comes."
Acknowledging that Williams may never master the system shows that the coaching staff will always believe there's room for growth in their franchise-quarterback, but also just how advanced and complex Johnson's offense can be. As for the quarterback appearing in preseason, that'll be a story on a week-by-week basis, though the team may not want to risk any injury chance and keep Williams on the sideline throughout.
