Purdue does not have many games it can realistically circle as winnable in Big Ten play. That is what makes Maryland’s Nov. 7 visit to West Lafayette so critical.
The Boilermakers are still building traction in Barry Odom’s second season, and the conference schedule will offer little sympathy.
Purdue must capitalize on matchups where the talent gap is manageable, home-field advantage matters and the opponent is navigating similar pressure. Maryland checks every box.
CBS Sports college football analyst Brad Crawford identified Maryland as Purdue’s biggest potential trap game because while the Boilermakers will view it as a prime opportunity for a conference win, the matchup remains deceptive.
“The Boilermakers should view this as one of the few winnable Big Ten games on their schedule, but the Terrapins have enough athleticism and offensive firepower to punish a flat performance,” Crawford wrote.
That is the razor-thin line Purdue must walk. The Boilermakers cannot afford to treat Maryland as a guaranteed breakthrough.
The Terrapins may be facing their own pressure, but they still boast enough perimeter speed and playmaking to seize control if Purdue starts sluggishly.

For a rebuilding program, the margin for error is nearly nonexistent. Turnovers, missed tackles and stalled early possessions can quickly turn a winnable afternoon into an uphill battle spent chasing points.
Until Purdue proves otherwise, the Boilermakers cannot count on casually erasing multi-score deficits, especially against an opponent capable of generating explosive chunk plays.
“Purdue cannot afford sloppy turnovers, missed tackles or another slow start against a program facing similar pressure to reach bowl eligibility,” Crawford wrote.

For Odom and the Boilermakers, turning winnable home opportunities into actual victories at Ross-Ade Stadium will be essential to establishing real momentum in Year 2.
