SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Hub City Spartanburgers showcased their offensive prowess in an impressive 11-4 victory over the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, driven by a remarkable seven-run fifth inning. This win improves the Spartanburgers' record to 24-38, while Jersey Shore falls to 20-41.
The game began with a strong performance from Spartanburgers' pitcher A.J. Russell, who struck out all three batters he faced in the first inning using just 14 pitches. The Spartanburg offense quickly followed suit, launching a series of hits against Jersey Shore's starter, Giussepe Velasquez. Paxton Kling initiated the attack with a single, followed by Maxton Martin, who also reached base. Antonis Macias then doubled to set the stage for Quincy Scott, who delivered a powerful blow by hitting his 12th home run of the season, sending the ball soaring onto the Spartanburg Community College Berm and giving his team an early 3-0 lead.
Despite Russell's strong start, he encountered challenges in the fourth inning when Jersey Shore managed to score two runs off four hits. However, Scott made a crucial defensive play by throwing out Kodey Shojinaga at home plate, helping to limit the damage.
After Russell's exit, Luke Savage and Cole Fehrman took over on the mound, combining to deliver four perfect innings of relief, keeping the BlueClaws at bay. Velasquez, after a rough start, settled down and held the Spartanburgers scoreless from the second through the fourth innings, facing the minimum number of batters.
As the fifth inning unfolded, the Hub City offense exploded. After a strikeout, two singles and a walk loaded the bases. Martin once again came through, driving in two runs with a single. A second walk followed, and a wild pitch along with another single from Scott contributed to a total of four runs in the inning, extending the lead to 7-2. The onslaught continued as Arturo De Freitas hit a two-run single, prompting a pitching change for Jersey Shore. Kevin Warunek entered but struggled, walking the first batter he faced and allowing Esteban Mejia to single in the tenth run of the game before the inning concluded.
The Spartanburgers added another run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly, while the BlueClaws managed to score two runs in the ninth off Aiden Brainard. Jesus Gamez came in to close out the game, recording the final out and sealing the victory for Hub City.
Looking ahead, the Spartanburgers and BlueClaws will meet again on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. ET. With the series tied at one game apiece, Hub City will send right-hander Jormy Nivar, who holds a record of 0-1 with a 16.88 ERA, to the mound against Jersey Shore's Ryan Dromboski, who has a record of 2-8 and a 5.11 ERA.
