Games return this week for the Raiders. And so too does the lineup of those who will have the honor of lighting the Al Davis torch at Allegiant Stadium. First up this year will be legendary linebacker Greg Biekert.
The former longtime Raiders middle linebacker will light the torch prior to the Raiders preseason opener against the Cardinals Thursday night.
Biekert was the team's pick in the 7th round of the 1993 NFL Draft. And for either seasons from 1994-2001, he was a mainstay in the middle of the Raiders defense while never missing a game. During that time, he averaged over 113 tackles per game, with his play jumping to another level in the successful Gruden years from 1998-2001.
His final game as a Raider, he was part of the most infamous play in NFL history. You may remember Charles Woodson forced the fumble that should have ended the game, but it was Biekert who recovered it. The play was then overturned by the defunct "Tuck Rule" allowing the Patriot to instead drive down to tie the game and take it to overtime.
To this day, Biekert's 704 solo tackles are second in Raiders franchise history.
