Rams' Ty Simpson could be waiting a while to take over for Matthew Stafford originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Matthew Stafford just won MVP, so it's obvious he's playing at the top of his game. There's no reason for the Los Angeles Rams to turn to rookie quarterback Ty Simpson this season, unless Stafford gets injured, of course.
But, it's largely been thought that Simpson might take over for Stafford after this season. Even though Stafford is firing on all cylinders and playing great football, at 38 years old, he's getting up there for a player in the NFL. With the Rams scooping up Simpson in the draft, it appeared to be a clue that they believe their days with Stafford are numbered.
But, not so fast. One NFL analyst thinks Simpson is going to have to wait quite a while to take over for Stafford. So, he better get comfy on that bench.
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Ty Simpson may not take over for Matthew Stafford very soonDan Graziano of ESPN has unleashed a feature with various quarterback predictions, including some going into next year's draft. In it, he projects that Stafford will come back for another season, leaving Simpson with two full seasons of training before taking over.
In the piece, his most likely outcome is, "The Rams have the awesome season everyone is expecting of them after the splashy acquisition of Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and the looming possible addition of Aaron Donald."
He adds, "Maybe they win the Super Bowl, maybe they fall just short. But either way, Stafford gets to the end of the season feeling fine and decides to play again in 2027."
Of course, if the Rams don't do well, Stafford might get some pressure to retire. But, with Garrett and top players in place, it makes sense that it's going to be another blockbuster year for this franchise.
