RC Lens has officially announced the loan acquisition of Franjo Ivanović from SL Benfica. The 22-year-old Croatian striker joins Lens on a temporary basis, with no option for a permanent transfer, as the club looks to bolster its squad following several player departures in the off-season.

This signing marks a significant addition for Lens, who have been active in the transfer market, making Ivanović their sixth signing during this window. The need for reinforcements has grown as the team prepares for the upcoming season, aiming to improve on their previous campaign.

In a competitive race for Ivanović's signature, Lens managed to fend off interest from Italian club Lazio. A key factor in the decision for the young forward was the opportunity to continue participating in the UEFA Champions League, a competition in which he made seven appearances last season with Benfica.

Ivanović's previous season was a blend of highs and lows after his transfer from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. He had an impressive start in Portugal, netting a goal on his debut during a UEFA Champions League qualifier against French team OGC Nice. However, his playing time fluctuated significantly throughout the season.

Initially, Ivanović was a regular starter, particularly in the league fixtures. However, the dynamics shifted following the sacking of head coach Bruno Lage and the subsequent appointment of José Mourinho in mid-September. This change in management limited Ivanović's opportunities, as he struggled to secure a starting position thereafter.

In total, Ivanović made 42 appearances across all competitions for Benfica, contributing nine goals and three assists. However, only 15 of those appearances were as a starter, with six of those coming before Mourinho took charge. This loan spell at Lens presents an opportunity for him to regain his form and secure more consistent playing time.
