While the Boston Red Sox struggled early on and fans were rightfully frustrated, a lot of it was due to the injuries they were dealing with on both sides of the baseball.
Even during the historic stretch from Boston recently, it wasn't healthy. Garrett Crochet, Roman Anthony, Trevor Story, and others have all been out.
Getting those three guys back will be just as important as anything for the Red Sox over the next month or so. It remains uncertain when Crochet will be back on the mound in a game, but there was an update on Story, Anthony, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on Saturday.
“Story to start rehab Sunday in Worcester. Roman Anthony on Tuesday for Portland. Isiah Kiner-Falefa on Wednesday with Worcester,” Ian Browne wrote.
Rehab assignments are often a step in the right direction, though they don't guarantee either player will be back soon. IKF, Anthony, and Story will not only have to get back into the swing of things, but they'll need to ensure they feel well enough to play.
Boston, 66-57 and 8.5 out in the American League East, isn't in the best position to win the division.
The Red Sox are six games ahead in the American League Wild Card, though, so they have some breathing room. Getting Story and Anthony back will only help with that.
