The stretch the Boston Red Sox have been on over the past few months has been historic for many reasons. Not only have the Red Sox done some things that teams in Major League Baseball have never done, but they've given themselves a chance to make a legitimate push come October.
The Red Sox now seem to be a team that has a chance to win a World Series, just like everybody expected them to at the beginning of the campaign. Everybody knew the team's talent, and they've finally put it all together.
While the Red Sox have obviously lost some games throughout this stretch, they've also been nearly unbeatable against teams over .500.
Before last week's loss on Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston made history never seen before in Major League Baseball. The last team to come close to the Red Sox was the Washington Senators in 1933.
“The Sox set a major-league record winning 15 consecutive games against teams with a winning record before Wednesday’s loss against the Diamondbacks. Joe Cronin and the 1933 Washington Senators were the last team to record 14 straight victories against above-.500 foes,” Peter Abraham wrote.
When stats approach 100 years, it's pretty clear how crazy these things are.
And while it's impressive that Boston has done this, it strongly suggests how it might look in the playoffs. The Red Sox have played extremely well against teams above .500, and that should be a promising sign come October.
