Reds’ Michael Toglia (dislocated shoulder) expected to go to IL Sunday

PHOENIX – Michael Toglia said he fared well overnight after dislocating his shoulder making a diving catch.

But the Cincinnati Reds’ infielder/outfielder won’t be able to get an MRI on the shoulder until Monday (Aug. 24), and the Reds were expected to play a man short for one game before making a roster move before the final game of their weekend series against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

That would mean a 10-day injured list stint that Toglia initially hoped to avoid.

“We wanted to see how he showed up, and then because of where we are on the west (coast), we’ll do something (Sunday, Aug. 23),” manager Terry Francona said.

The Reds just started a nine-game, 10-day road trip that continues in San Francisco before concluding against the Cubs in Chicago.

Toglia hurt his right (glove-side) shoulder in the first inning of the series opener in Phoenix on a diving catch in left field.

He wore a sling when he arrived the next day at the ballpark, but took it off during pregame prep in the clubhouse.

“It’s sore. No (serious) pain,” he said. “I slept fine. We won’t know anything more until I get imaging.”

Toglia, the former Colorado Rockies infielder, was signed to a minor-league free agent deal in January and made his Reds debut this month.

Early indications suggested the severity of the injury could be on the lesser-damage end of the spectrum for dislocations.

“I know they felt like when the doctor saw him and they put it right back in, that was a good thing,” Francona said. “But we still want to get him checked out.”
