Screaming Bill Belichick Ignored by UNC Players Before Brutal Penalty

The UNC-TCU game had an unusual moment late in the first half. With TCU lining up to punt, North Carolina coach Bill Belichick was seen shouting instructions from the sideline as he tried to make sure his players knew what to do.

The plan did not go as expected. UNC defensive lineman Jaylen Harvey went after the TCU punter and was called for running into the kicker. The five-yard penalty extended TCU’s possession just before halftime.

Bill Belichick’s Message Doesn’t Get Through

With less than 30 seconds left in the first half, TCU lined up to punt from its own 49-yard line. UNC appeared set to reach halftime without giving TCU another opportunity. On the sideline, Bill Belichick was trying to get his defense set before the play.

Belichick was seen pointing and shouting toward his players as TCU punter John Hoyet Chance prepared to kick. The message appeared to be an instruction not to rush the punter.

“Bill Belichick clearly saying Punt Safe (no rush) he’s got to be LIVID about this penalty!” Dan Casey, longtime college football front office staffer, wrote on X.

But the play did not go the way the coach wanted. UNC defensive lineman Jaylen Harvey went toward Chance after the punt and made contact with the punter. The officials threw a flag and called UNC for running into the kicker, giving TCU a five-yard penalty.

The penalty gave TCU a first down at the UNC 44-yard line with only 19 seconds left in the half. It was a costly mistake at a time when UNC needed to avoid giving the Horned Frogs another possession.

TCU, however, could not take advantage of the extra opportunity. On the next play, the Horned Frogs were called for offensive holding, wiping out the benefit of the previous penalty and moving them back. The mistake did not lead to points, but it still left Belichick visibly frustrated on the sideline.

Belichick Snubbed ESPN Reporter’s Attempt to Get Halftime Quote

Belichick was seen speaking with his coaching staff as the first half came to an end. He then headed to the locker room as halftime began.

At halftime, an ESPN reporter tried to speak with Belichick, but the coach reportedly did not stop for an interview. He continued toward the locker room, giving no comment as the teams prepared for the second half.

The moment drew extra attention because it came during Belichick’s first season at North Carolina. The veteran coach appeared to be signaling for a safe approach on the punt, but the message did not translate into the result he wanted on the field.

In the end, the late first-half sequence did not cost UNC the game. TCU could not turn the opportunity into points, and UNC went on to secure a 15-10 win.
