On August 12, in Bismarck, North Dakota, the Shady's Black Sox slowpitch softball team from Jamestown celebrated a remarkable end to their season by winning the Men's Slowpitch Recreational 3 West State Softball Championship. This prestigious tournament took place at Cottonwood Park, featuring 32 teams from across the state, with the Black Sox being the sole representative from Jamestown.
The state tournament kicked off on Saturday, where the Black Sox faced off against Minot's Gooseneck Implement and Bismarck's Century Morrison. The team showcased their skills by winning both matches decisively, with scores of 13-10 and 14-4, respectively. These victories set the tone for an exciting Sunday filled with high-stakes competition.
On Sunday, the Black Sox found themselves in a nail-biting situation against Center Machinery. Trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Zachary Ringer stepped up to the plate and delivered a pivotal three-run home run, propelling the Black Sox to an 11-10 victory and securing their spot in the semifinals.
In the semifinal round, the Black Sox continued their impressive run by defeating Mandan's Silver Dollar Bar with a score of 7-4. This victory propelled them into the championship game, where they faced the Bismarck Prairie Pro Scoopers in a thrilling contest.
The championship match was a tightly contested affair, with both teams exchanging leads throughout the game. However, Jamestown High School Class of 2025 graduate Nate Walz made a crucial play in the top of the seventh inning, securing the final out and preventing any scoring attempts from the opposing team. The Black Sox emerged victorious with a narrow 10-9 win, clinching the state title.
Throughout the tournament, several players stood out with their exceptional performances. Nate Walz was the standout hitter, finishing the weekend with an impressive .714 batting average. Tyson Jorissen, a JHS Class of 2024 graduate and notable Blue Jay baseball player, also made significant contributions, achieving a .667 average along with a triple, double, and home run. Adam Sortland, another Blue Jay alum, served as the team's leadoff hitter and concluded the tournament with a .278 average.
Other key contributors included Travis Duffy, who recorded a .667 average with two doubles and a home run, and Zachary Ringer, who went 10-for-18 over the weekend, including a double, triple, and three home runs. Austin Carr also made his mark with a .556 average and six doubles, while Hunter Larson and Matt Grounds contributed averages of .533 and .500, respectively. Team manager Dustin Scheer pitched all five games, finishing with a .429 average at the plate.
With their state championship win, the Black Sox will advance to the Recreational 2 level for the upcoming season. Prior to this tournament, the team had a successful run in Jamestown's Wednesday night slowpitch softball league, where they finished as the runner-up after a close championship series against Esto Dignus. The Black Sox concluded their season with an overall record of 20-7, marking a memorable year for the team.
