Shaun Anderson, a right-handed pitcher who once held promise as a prospect for the Boston Red Sox, has officially entered free agency following his release by the Los Angeles Angels. This development comes after the Angels designated him for assignment earlier this week, a common procedure in Major League Baseball (MLB) that allows teams to remove players from their roster.
The Red Sox, who recently concluded a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners, faced disappointment in the final two games, losing the series after winning the opener. They are now preparing for a four-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles, hoping to regain momentum in the competitive American League East.
Anderson was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft, receiving a signing bonus of $700,000. He began his professional career in the Low-A league and quickly progressed through the ranks, moving to Single-A and then to Double-A within his first two years. However, his time with the Red Sox came to an end on July 25, 2017, when he was traded along with fellow prospect Gregory Santos to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for veteran infielder Eduardo Nunez. At the time of the trade, Anderson was regarded as the 18th-ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization according to MLB Pipeline.
After making his MLB debut with the Giants in 2019, Anderson's career has seen him play for several teams, including the Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, Miami Marlins, and most recently, the Angels. Throughout his career, he has struggled to find consistency on the mound. In the current season with the Angels, Anderson has posted a record of 2-0 but carries a high earned run average (ERA) of 7.65 over 12 appearances. In total, his MLB career statistics show a record of 6-7 with a 6.53 ERA across 88 games, including 18 starts.
As the Red Sox look to improve their standing, they are currently holding onto a Wild Card spot with a record of 75-65. Their recent losses to the Mariners were particularly disappointing, with an 8-3 defeat on Wednesday following a 9-6 loss on Tuesday. The team is also dealing with injury concerns, particularly with catcher Adley Rutschman, who has missed time but is expected to return soon. Interim manager Chad Tracy expressed optimism about Rutschman's potential availability for the upcoming game against the Orioles, noting that the team is taking a cautious approach to ensure he is fully ready to contribute.
With Anderson now a free agent, he will be looking for a new opportunity to revitalize his career in MLB. His journey through various teams has provided him with valuable experience, and he will hope to find a club that can utilize his talents effectively moving forward.
