The Pittsburgh Steelers stretched their Joey Porter Jr. contract standoff to the final full week of August 2026. Even All-Pro cornerback teammate Jalen Ramsey shared an opinion on it. But so has the father of Asante Samuel Jr.
The elder Samuel dropped a blunt take on Porter’s situation. But he doesn’t take the cornerback’s side here.
“I don’t think he’s handling the situation the best way. [Especially] by not going to practice,” Samuel said on his “Say What Needs to be Said” podcast Monday. “You’ve gotta know when to read the room and who you’re dealing with.”

He added more context into what Porter is also doing. Which involves dealing with a fiery fanbase but also the organization.
“These people seem like they really get offended over there in Pittsburgh. They really are in tune to what’s going on and their players and who their players are and paying their players,” Samuel said. “They do things a certain way, they don’t just like to break bread.”
Head coach Mike McCarthy originally placed Porter on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list during NFL Training Camp. However, speculation grew that Porter is really sitting out amid his contract debate.
The summer already saw Seattle Seahawks star cornerback Devon Witherspoon reset the market. Witherspoon signed a $132 million extension for four years during August camp.
So now the focus shifts over to how the Steelers handle Porter from here. However, Christian Gonzalez of the New England Patriots is one more CB who can change the market there too, as he’s up for his own new extension.
