Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire joked recently that Patrick Mahomes still had a year of college eligibility left and if the three-time Super Bowl MVP wanted to use it, "I'm sure there's a big check we can write him."

McGuire's not serious about the player, but he might well be serious about the position, foreshadowing another roster addition at quarterback.

A court ruling Friday, Aug. 21, in Louisville, Kentucky, gave additional eligibility to a group of players including Tommy Castellanos, a former UCF, Boston College and Florida State dual-threat QB with 8,433 yards of career total offense and 72 total touchdowns. The Athletic, citing an unnamed source, reported that Texas Tech is his most likely landing spot.

On3 reported the athletes covered under the ruling can enter the NCAA transfer portal for a one-week period, according to court documents, and that Castellanos is expected to do so. He's previously indicated he couldn't return to FSU because he didn't have a roster spot.

Will Hammond, recovered from a season-ending knee injury in 2025, is the Red Raiders' No. 1 quarterback, followed on the depth chart by Tulsa transfer Kirk Francis and sophomore Lloyd "Chub" Jones III.

Castellanos last year for Florida State was a 58% passer for 2,760 yards and 15 touchdowns, and he rushed for 557 yards and 9 TDs. Having played four seasons in four years, his eligibility expired and he received minicamp invitations from the Tennessee Titans and the Miami Dolphins to try out as a wide receiver. During the pre-draft process, he was measured at 5-foot-9 3/4 and weighed 198 pounds.

Castellanos' star rose during his 2023 sophomore season at Boston College when he threw for 2,248 yards and 15 touchdowns, albeit with 14 interceptions, and ran for 1,114 yards and 13 TDs.

The next season, dealing with injuries and playing in only eight games, he passed for 1,366 yards and a career-high 18 TDs and cut his interceptions to 5. He rushed for 194 yards and 1 TD. He lost the starting job late in the year and had his name entered into the transfer portal again.

Castellanos was an all-state honoree at Ware County High School in Waycross, Georgia. He played in five games as a true freshman at UCF before transferring to Boston College.
