In a recent display of his talent and dedication, Tilak Varma, captain of South Zone, has expressed his deep-seated passion for Test cricket after leading his team into the final of the Duleep Trophy. Varma's performances in the semifinals were instrumental, as he scored unbeaten innings of 116 and 51 against North Zone, showcasing his skills and ambition to represent India in the longest format of the game.
At just 23 years old, Varma has already made a name for himself in white-ball cricket, serving as India's T20I vice-captain. However, his heart lies with red-ball cricket, a sentiment he reiterated after South Zone's victory. "I have always loved to play red-ball cricket, and I have never dreamt of playing white-ball formats for India, but that's God's plan," Varma stated. His journey through T20s and ODIs has not diminished his desire to make a case for a Test call-up, which he regards as a significant ambition in his cricketing career.
Despite his recent success in limited-overs formats, Varma insists that his achievements in white-ball cricket have not come at the cost of his aspirations in red-ball cricket. He reflected on his hard work and dedication to the longer format, stating, "I have worked hard, no one has seen it, maybe since I was 10 years old, and now I am 23. I got selected to white-ball formats due to the IPL. But before that, I have ground a lot in red-ball cricket." This commitment illustrates his unwavering focus on excelling in Test cricket.
However, the young cricketer has faced challenges in pursuing his red-ball ambitions due to the packed international schedule that has limited his opportunities to play domestic cricket. Varma acknowledged this struggle, saying, "For my country, right now, I am available for T20s and ODIs, but I love to play red-ball cricket. But I don't have much time to play domestic red-ball cricket because in the last three-four years I was trying to play the Ranji Trophy." His determination to participate in as much domestic red-ball cricket as possible reflects his desire to hone his skills and make a mark in Test cricket.
Tilak's standout performances in the Duleep Trophy semifinals highlight his potential as a future Test player. In the match against North Zone, he played a crucial role in South Zone's successful chase of 181 runs in the second innings, finishing with an unbeaten 51 and forming a vital partnership with R Smaran. Earlier, he had laid the groundwork for victory with his remarkable 116 in the first innings, contributing significantly to South Zone's first-innings lead.
With South Zone now set to clash with East Zone in the Duleep Trophy final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai starting September 6, Varma's ambition and talent will be on full display. His journey through the Duleep Trophy could very well be a stepping stone towards fulfilling his dream of representing India in Test cricket, a goal that remains firmly in his sights.
