The 2026-27 Arizona girls high school volleyball season is officially underway, showcasing talent across six conferences governed by the Arizona Interscholastic Association. With numerous compelling narratives unfolding, fans can expect an exciting season ahead.
In the 6A conference, the spotlight is on Xavier College Prep, which aims to secure its third consecutive championship title. The Gators, currently ranked No. 8 nationally by MaxPreps, have established themselves as a powerhouse, having claimed victory over Tempe Corona del Sol in the finals for the past two years. This season, they return with a standout player who many consider the best in the state. Meanwhile, in the 5A conference, Sunrise Mountain is poised to break its streak of runner-up finishes, while in the 1A division, Cicero Prep is on the hunt for a fourth straight title.
Among the elite players to keep an eye on this season is Tessa Larkin from Xavier College Prep, an outside hitter entering her senior year. Larkin is not only the reigning Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year but also a Stanford commit. Her impressive statistics from last season include 419 kills, 248 digs, 71 blocks, and 39 aces. Xavier's head coach, Lamar-Renee Bryant, praised Larkin as one of the most accomplished players in the country, highlighting her leadership and work ethic.
Another player to watch is Mikaela Lee-Tsosie, a junior middle blocker from Corona del Sol. Standing at 6-foot-3, Lee-Tsosie is integral to her team despite the loss of ten seniors. Last season, she contributed 208 kills and 69 blocks, ranking third on her team in kills. Her coach, Ben Maxfield, noted her experience and physical presence as key assets for the Aztecs.
Sophia Gregg, a sophomore setter from Perry, also stands out among the younger talent. Gregg has already made a name for herself by playing with the United States U-17 team at the Pan American Cup, where she was named the best setter of the tournament. Last year, she recorded 307 kills and 44 aces, and her coach, Andrew Yamashiro, emphasized her importance to a talented Perry squad.
Lauren Forelli, a senior outside hitter from Liberty, is another formidable player, having led her team with 295 kills last season. She also contributed significantly with 208 digs, 34 blocks, and 32 aces, and has already committed to Michigan State for her collegiate career.
Kristen Sheehy, a senior middle hitter from Sandra Day O'Connor, brings a powerful presence at the net, having recorded 164 kills and 57 blocks last season. Sheehy is set to continue her volleyball journey at TCU next year.
Additionally, Makinlee Landis from Hamilton is a junior middle blocker/outside hitter who could be a breakout star this year. With 147 kills and 86 blocks last season, she is expected to play a crucial role for her team.
Saydie Vega, a junior outside hitter from Casteel, had an impressive sophomore season, tallying 339 kills, ranking her eighth in the state. Her ability to perform in high-pressure situations, including a hitting percentage above .500 in key matches, makes her a player to watch as Casteel aims to improve upon its 29-11 record from last year.
Hayes Haan, a senior outside hitter from Sunnyslope, is another notable player, having logged 299 kills, 225 digs, 31 blocks, and 24 aces last season. Haan's experience will be vital as the Vikings look to build on their 23-14 record.
Lastly, Sienna Cathey, a senior outside hitter from Perry, transferred from Gilbert Christian after a stellar season where she led her previous team with 366 kills. Her addition is expected to significantly impact Perry's performance this season.
As the season progresses, fans are encouraged to participate in a poll to vote for the top player among these talented athletes. The poll will remain open until Wednesday, September 9, at 6 p.m., allowing supporters to weigh in on who they believe deserves the top spot.
