Lukas Hornicek produced a top impression of Tim Krul’s best game against Spurs to keep the game scoreless in the opening half-hour.
Newcastle United had a couple of difficult chances but the hosts had three or four clear openings, one foiled by a Hall lunge to deflect a point-blank Porro shot to safety.
Dedic and Elanga were combining well on the right flank without severely testing Kinsky. Barnes was almost anonymous, though he put in a lot of defensive work at the start of the second half to repel Spurs.
Cometh the hour, cometh the Mags.
Nico Gonzo played a brilliant crossfield pass to the marauding Dedic. His cushioned header put Elanga in half a yard of space just inside the box. A rapid twist threw offSandro Tonali and an accurate left-foot shot rolled into the net via the far post.
Ten minutes later, Steur and Woltemade replaced Gonzo and Willock. That’s something we rarely saw under the previous manager: a proactive pair of subs when we were ahead.
The move reaped immediate dividends, when Hall finally played in a dangerous corner, BNW headed it down beyond the far post and Wissa, busy-busy all afternoon, whipped in the second goal with an improvised overhead kick.
The scorers were replaced by Murphy and Ramsey on 82 minutes.
BNW had two chances to put the game to bed, as did Barnes, but each time they fluffed their lines. Like every other man in blue, however, they worked hard and thoroughly deserved the three points and clean sheet against opponents who flattered to deceive.
The final whistle went with some players in the vanquished “Big Club” trying to provoke the winners. As Sir Bobby Robson once said after a great win in north London, some people need to learn how to lose.
