Tottenham have reached an agreement to allow goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to sign for Juventus on a season-long loan, the Press Association understands.

Vicario had been in limbo all summer after he asked Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi to leave and return to his homeland following three years in north London.

Juventus emerged as Vicario’s favoured option, but they first targeted a move for Emiliano Martinez and then Parma youngster Zion Suzuki.

However, after developments across the weekend, the Serie A club opened talks with Tottenham on Sunday and have wrapped up a season-long loan move with the option to buy the Italy international, PA understands.

De Zerbi gave the green light for Vicario to leave after Antonin Kinsky stepped up to guide the club away from relegation with a string of fine displays in the final seven matches of last season.

A transfer to Inter Milan initially appeared on the cards for Vicario before the Italian champions decided to go in a different direction with their goalkeeper situation.

It left Vicario as an option for Juventus, but boss Luciano Spalletti had Argentina’s World Cup winner Martinez high up on his wish list before talks with Aston Villa stalled weeks ago with a gap in valuation over a final fee for the 33-year-old.

Juventus next turned to Suzuki of Parma and, even after Paris Saint-Germain stole a march on the Italian club, the option for the Japan international to sign for the Old Lady on a season-long loan appeared a viable solution for all parties.

A dramatic weekend of transfer movement has since followed with Suzuki’s move to PSG off and Villa now ready to sign the Parma goalkeeper, which momentarily opened the door again for Martinez to go to Juventus.

With doubts over the fitness of Martinez due to a finger injury, Juventus accelerated their pursuit of Italy number two Vicario and are set to secure the services of the 29-year-old in time for him to feature in Sunday’s league opener at Frosinone.

Vicario, who has made 117 appearances for Tottenham, signed from Empoli in 2023 and helped the club to Europa League success last year, but experienced a difficult 2025-26 campaign.
