UFC 330 results: Islam Makhachev rides out title defense, Mackenzie Dern dominates

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned this weekend with a UFC 330 championship doubleheader at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, August 15.

Immediately out of the gate, it was clear that fans were in for a treat, with six of the first eight fights of the night ending by knockout or submission, including a stunning performance from Charles Johnson, who pulled off the ultra rare Scottish twister.

In the co-main event, Mackenzie Dern defended her strawweight title over Gillian Robertson with a dominant performance, leading into the highly anticipated welterweight title fight between Islam Mahkachev and Ian Machado Gary in the main event.

In the main event, a headkick out of nowhere from Makhachev in the middle of the second round allowed the reigning champ to take total control of the bout, as Garry scrambled to recover. Gary managed to hang until the bell, but momentum was firmly in the champ’s corner.

In Round 3, Garry was able to fight off a Makhachev takedown and got back to his feet, where he was finally beginning to find some rhythm with his standup. Makhachev appeared to be slowing down, while Garry was gaining confidence as we entered the championship rounds.

After a hardfought fourth round, we entered the final frame with Makhachev holding a slight edge thanks to his control against the cage. Makhachev was able to land a big takedown against the fence in Round 5, and took control of Gary’s back.

Makhachev was able to continue riding Gary’s back for the remainder of the fight to finish in dominant position. It was enough control to ride out the win and retain his title, joining Henry Cejudo, Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones, and Amanda Nunes as the only fighters to successfully defend their UFC titles in two divisions.
