USC opening opponent San Jose State names starting quarterback

Believe it or not, we are now just 10 days away from USC’s season opener. The Trojans will kick off their 2026 campaign a week from Saturday when they host San Jose State at the Coliseum.

We now know who will be starting at quarterback for the Spartans when they visit Los Angeles. On Wednesday, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that San Jose State plans to start Hawaii transfer Luke Weaver under center against USC.

After three years at the junior college level, Weaver spent last season with the Rainbow Warriors. He appeared in five games, completing 60% of his passes for 628 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. Weaver transferred to San Jose State this past offseason.

Weaver will be the first opposing quarterback to go up against Gary Patterson’s USC defense. Patterson, the longtime TCU head coach, was hired as the Trojans’ defensive coordinator in January.

Kickoff between USC and San Jose State is set for 12:00 p.m. Pacific time on August 29.
