What Alex Golesh saw from Bryson Washington in latest Auburn football scrimmage

AUBURN — The past couple weeks haven't bred much certainty for what Bryson Washington's upcoming season entails. The past couple days, however, have been a different story.

The Baylor transfer missed most of the spring, and his preseason had a complicated start. Sophomore Omar Mabson II seemingly jumped Washington in Auburn football's running back rotation, following an offseason in which head coach Alex Golesh said Washington was still getting into playing shape.

Nearing the end of fall camp, Washington's trending up after the second of Auburn's preseason scrimmages.

"Bryson, the last week, has shown why he’s been able to do what he’s done for the last couple of years," Golesh said Wednesday, Aug. 19. "He’s taken steps."

Washington was Baylor's leading rusher last fall with 788 rushing yards, but for the entirety of his three seasons in Waco, he recorded 1,861 yards on the ground and 18 touchdowns.

Golesh said that Washington has demonstrated his physicality of late. And with Jeremiah Cobb taking minimal reps Wednesday, both Mabson and Washington ran with Auburn's first-rotation offense. As Washington practiced his way into playing shape, Golesh saw some breakthrough in the midday heat.

"I talked about the long drives today, and he needed that worse than anybody," Golesh said of Washington. "It was good for him to push through that. He’s taken big steps. I can’t tell you that I’m proud of him yet. I’m going to keep ripping his (expletive), but he’s come a long way."
