Jordan Spieth was the biggest name to fail to make it past the first hurdle in the FedEx Cup playoffs, with the three-time major champion falling short of squeezing into the top 50 in Memphis.

Spieth has now seen his season end at the FedEx St. Jude Championship three years in a row, with the 33-year-old’s 19th place finish at TPC Southwind not enough to earn him a spot in the BMW Championship this week.

It is a shame for the playoffs that Spieth will play no further part. His round on Sunday reminded everyone of how box office he can be.

Jordan Spieth has given the PGA Tour a headache ahead of the 2027 season

The problem for the PGA Tour is that Jordan Spieth missing out on making the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings is unlikely to impact his schedule for 2027.

With that, the tour should be asking Spieth to make sure that he tees it up at least a couple of times during the Fall.

It was incredibly disappointing to see Spieth not play a single event in the Fall 12 months ago. He finished the season 54th in the FedEx Cup, so was not guaranteed to play in all of the signature events this year.

However, Spieth has played in every single signature event in 2026.

And you can almost guarantee that it will be a similar story next year, even if he is relying on sponsor invites on certain occasions.

The PGA Tour needs Jordan Spieth to prove himself in the Fall events

Some will argue that Spieth has done more than enough to earn each invite. He is a captivating player to watch, and he brings plenty of attention to events, even when he is not in contention.

Sponsor invites will also disappear after next year.

But it arguably hurts the PGA Tour when they attempt to claim that the FedEx St. Jude Championship is the most important week of the year when one of the players fighting for a top 50 spot is almost guaranteed to be a regular fixture in the following season’s signature events anyway.

Spieth certainly played like a man who felt enormous pressure. But in truth, the stakes were never as high as they were for some of his peers.

The PGA Tour is entitled to ask Spieth to play in at least two events in the Fall and help them out by bringing more attention to those tournaments.

Spieth is reportedly planning to play the Baycurrent Classic, which is a good start. But it would silence all critics ahead of 2027 if he did go and register strong finishes at a handful of events.
