On the heels of this year’s Naismith Hall of Fame ceremony, Mychal Thompson is calling for a former LA Lakers player to be inducted next. Thompson, however, isn’t making a case for himself.
Instead, the two-time NBA champion during the Lakers’ “Showtime” era tweeted on Monday that a former teammate of Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant deserves HOF honors.
“OK [Basketball] Halla Fame…Time to Induct Robert Horry…What’s the hold up?”
The opinion drew different reactions from fans, with some supporting the idea of Horry getting a Hall of Fame induction and others arguing that he wasn’t worthy of one.
One netizen posited the idea that the 2003-04 Lakers would have won the NBA championship had they kept Horry in the lineup, instead of signing Karl Malone. Thompson went on to respond.
“U might be right about that…Never thought a that…”
In his 16-year career, Horry won seven NBA titles (three with the Lakers, two with Hakeem Olajuwon’s Houston Rockets squad and two with the San Antonio Spurs).
Although the 6-foot-10 forward was never the main man on any of his teams, Horry was a reliable piece in his coaches’ rotation, thanks to his rebounding, perimeter shooting, and clutch gene.
He earned the moniker “Big Shot Rob” through moments like his buzzer-beating 3 in Game 4 of the 2002 Western Conference finals. With O’Neal and Bryant both missing layups in the dying seconds of this game, Horry picked up an extra possession and made the nerve-wracking shot to give the Lakers a 100-99 win that night.
On Mamba Day, Lakers Pay Visit to Hospital in Luka Doncic’s HometownAfter Bryant hung up his Lakers jersey for good in 2016, the city of Los Angeles declared Aug. 24 as “Kobe Bryant Day.” The occasion, which also came to be known as “Mamba Day,” takes place on the date 8-24, which consists of the two numbers that Bryant wore during his 20-year Lakers stint.
On this year’s edition of Mamba Day, Luka Doncic and a number of his Lakers teammates paid a surprise visit to the University Medical Center in Doncic’s hometown of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Among the Lakers who joined Doncic on this trip were Austin Reaves, Jarred Vanderbilt, Dalton Knecht and Jake LaRavia.
