Nigerian international goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has left Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s beloved Wrexham AFC on a season-long loan, joining EFL Championship rivals Charlton Athletic.
Okonkwo, 24, joins the Addicks having spent the last three seasons with Wrexham, initially on loan from Arsenal, where he rose through the youth ranks.
The move sees Okonkwo head back to London, where he was born and raised, joining a club where he’ll likely take over as the starter between the sticks.

“This loan is a good opportunity for Arthur to go and continue his development down at Charlton,” Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said. “He's another player who's played a significant role for us over the last few years, and we'll be watching his progress closely.”
As for Okonkwo, whose contract with Wrexham will end at the conclusion of this season, he said, “I’m happy to be here, and I’m ready to go. Coming here, it’s another season where I really want to do well and improve again. Speaking to the manager, that’s what he wants me to do here - not only to do well, but to improve as a goalkeeper.
“It’s a great group. They’ve welcomed me really well, and I can’t wait to get to know them even more.”
The former Gunners shot-stopper heads to The Valley stadium - where a dead body was discovered earlier this week - having made 121 appearances for the Red Dragons and helping them earn back-to-back promotions prior to last season.
The 2025/2026 season saw Parkinson bring veteran Welsh international goalkeeper Danny Ward into the mix to challenge for the starting job, only for the former Leicester City keeper to pick up an injury early in the year. Okonkwo took over as the starter for the majority of the season, before Ward took his place for the final four games.

Wrexham followed this with the club-record signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson this summer for £8 million ($10.8 million), as per Reuters. The 26-year-old joined on a four-year deal, essentially signalling the end of Okonkwo’s Wrexham career.
Following Okonkwo’s arrival in London, Charlton manager Nathan Jones said, “I’m delighted to bring Arthur to the club. We know how good a goalkeeper he is - he made two world-class saves against us last season, one in each game we played against Wrexham.
“He also showed a real desire to come to us after our initial meeting, which was important for us. He’s an excellent shot-stopper, of good pedigree, with good experience, and the teams he’s played in have done well, so I'm looking forward to working with him.”
Okonkwo joins a Charlton side currently joint third in the Championship, having beaten Derby County 2-1 in their opening game on Saturday. Next up will be a trip to the London Stadium where they’ll face recently relegated West Ham United.
Meanwhile, Wrexham are joint 13th after a 1-1 draw at Welsh rivals Cardiff City on Monday to begin their campaign. They are scheduled to host Watford on Saturday at the Racecourse Ground.
