The Cleveland Cavaliers are sneakily a team that still has a ton to do this offseason, and time isn't exactly on their side anymore.
There's an expectation that the Cavaliers will eventually do something with James Harden, but after moving on from Dennis Schroder in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland still has ways to save money and improve the roster. The Cavaliers are a decent team, at least on paper, but probably not good enough to win a championship as things stand.
They'll need guys like Donovan Mitchell and Harden to play at a high level, which is possible, but they'ven't done so yet, at least when it matters most.
To save money and hopefully make other moves in the future, Cleveland has explored moving on from Max Strus. According to the latest report, they still have some level of interest in doing so.
“After agreeing Friday to trade Schröder to Charlotte, Cleveland remains in active search of a trade to send out Max Strus as Strus enters the final year of his current contract at $16.7 million, league sources say.
“Completing the deal that ships out Schröder will shed nearly $7 million in salary for next season, but the Cavaliers are said to covet even more financial flexibility if they can manufacture it either for their pursuit of Nuggets restricted free Peyton Watson or Hawks unrestricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga as well as the eventual re-signing of James Harden,” Marc Stein wrote
The bigger part here is that the Cavaliers still have interest in guys like Jonathan Kuminga, Peyton Watson, and perhaps others. If the Cavaliers can find a way to include Strus in a deal for either one of those players in a sign-and-trade, it could be a perfect outcome.
