Ex-Yankees pitcher calls out Aaron Boone over Jazz Chisholm Jr decision originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees and Aaron Boone continue to make some questionable decisions with how they want to build their lineup.
It still feels very analytically focused, and perhaps not playing the best nine guys every day. At the same time, certain players have struggled, putting Boone in a somewhat strange spot.
That includes infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is typically one of the better infielders in Major League Baseball, at least offensively speaking.
Not that Chisholm is a superstar by any means, but he's an above-average player who simply hasn't played well throughout this campaign.
To put it mildly, this has been his worst season in Major League Baseball, at least in a year that he was expected to be much better. He is a free agent at the end of the campaign, so playing at this level really doesn't help anybody involved.
It doesn't help that the Yankees haven't exactly always put him in the best spots. There have been times when they don't even play him against right-handed starters, including a game over the weekend.
Recently, a former Yankees pitcher said he doesn't think that's the right decision.
“Facing righties, you gotta give Jazz a chance to get going here down the stretch,” David Cone said on the YES Network Sunday, per NJ.com. “He’s that kind of player if he gets hot.”
It's truly tough to disagree with Cone in a situation like this.
Not only do the Yankees need the best nine players on the field every single day, but they really need Chisholm to be the guy that everybody knows he can be come playoff time.
