Germie Bernard reveals key advantage in learning Steelers playbook

Learning a new NFL playbook can be overwhelming for any rookie wide receiver. However, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Germie Bernard is leveraging his rich collegiate background to accelerate his growth at training camp.

Transitioning to head coach Mike McCarthy’s detail-heavy, timing-based scheme, the second-round pick is lining up across the formation at the X, Z, and Y positions to maximize his offensive impact.

In a video shared during the “Locked on Steelers” podcast, Bernard credits his smooth transition to the NFL to his time at the University of Alabama. Bernard said it was where he learned the nuances of complex, detail-oriented passing systems.

"It's very detail-oriented," Bernard said of the Steelers' new offense. "I came from an offense that was like that when I was at ‘Bama, and so just making sure I'm doing my best of just studying the plays, making sure that I'm knowing my assignments, asking many questions as I can."

While adapting to Aaron Rodgers’ cadence and subtle route-depth adjustments requires constant focus, Bernard embraces the mental workload. Rather than trying to emulate established veteran teammates like DK Metcalf or Michael Pittman Jr., Bernard focuses strictly on mastering his own skill set and mastering every position on the field.

"I mean, just being versatile," Bernard explained. "That's something that I hold dearly to my heart just because I know it presents me with a lot of opportunities. So just being able to be versatile, being able to know all the positions is going to give you more of an advantage, you know, it's going to give you more opportunities to make plays and get in the game."

Bernard’s physical play, route precision, and willingness to execute dirty work in run blocking make him an ideal fit for Pittsburgh's receiver rotation. By embracing multi-positional versatility, the rookie is positioning himself as a reliable, indispensable piece of the Steelers' offense.
