Going 27-3 at any stretch in a season in Major League Baseball is flat-out ridiculous. There's a reason why what the Boston Red Sox did was historic, though it doesn't necessarily guarantee that they're going to win a World Series.
We’ve seen this happen six other times in Major League Baseball history, and the Red Sox are the only team that has ever been more than four games under at their lowest point. ESPN recently did a breakdown of the six teams that have gone 27-3 during the season over the past 100 years, and the Red Sox are the weirdest team of the bunch.
Boston was 37-48 before their streak and was 14 games under .500 at one point. Every other team was above .500 by multiple games before their stretch. What makes matters even more interesting is that three of the six won a World Series.
“1936 Giants 49-44 Lost World Series 1941 Yankees 33-24 Won World Series 1947 Yankees 27-23 Won World Series 1953 Yankees 17-9 Won World Series 1977 Royals 64-51 Lost ALCS 2017 Indians 69-56 Lost ALDS,” ESPN posted.
A 50% chance for the Red Sox here, history-wise, is pretty much as good a chance as any other team in Major League Baseball has ever had.
Obviously, there's no guarantee that Boston will even come close to winning the World Series, as this season has been very strange. However, history says that a 50% chance is in the works.
It's probably only fair to say that if Red Sox fans were told they had a 50% chance to win a World Series based on a couple of stats at the beginning of the season.
