The New York Mets decided to fire Carlos Mendoza, and not everything has gone according to plan since. The Mets have still been one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball from top to bottom, though some injuries may be a factor.
Regardless, the Mets are expected to be in search of a new manager in the offseason, with a couple of names currently leading the way.
Among the names that have been floated over the past few weeks to months, Carlos Beltran has come up just about more than anybody. Beltran, a franchise legend, should fit in well in Queens.
“When the Mets fired Carlos Mendoza in June, they also immediately made it clear that interim manager Andy Green would return to the front office upon season’s end. That alone should have been definitive proof that Steve Cohen and David Stearns will name Beltrán their next manager.
“We might not need to wait too long for an announcement, either. Beltrán will have his No. 15 retired in September, and wouldn’t that be the best time to inform fans that he’ll be back in the dugout beginning next spring? Assuming that things go as planned, this would mark Beltrán’s second time managing the Mets, though he resigned before spring training in 2020 for his alleged role in the Astros’ cheating scandal,” Jake Elman wrote.
Remember now, the Mets attempted to make Beltran their manager just a few years ago, and he was for a short time.
But the Houston Astros cheating scandal changed that. Fast forward to the 2026-27 offseason, and not many people care much about what Houston did anymore. He'll be more than fine to manage in New York, with the expectation that he will do just that.
