Deshaun Watson finally has the job he wanted in Cleveland, but earning back the support of Browns fans may prove just as important as winning the starting role. This week, the quarterback made an effort to connect with supporters after a difficult preseason moment.

That move, however, drew a sharp reaction from NFL analyst John Frascella and put Watson’s relationship with Cleveland fans back in the conversation.

Watson was seen signing autographs and taking selfies with Browns fans Thursday night before Cleveland’s preseason finale. The appearance came only days after the quarterback was loudly booed during a preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills, making the timing of his interaction with supporters stand out.

Frascella shared a post showing Watson with fans on X and questioned the intent behind the gesture. The NFL analyst wrote, “This is called ‘Overcorrecting the Narrative.’”

His comment came during an important stretch for Watson, who was just named Cleveland’s Week 1 starter after competing with second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

The fan controversy began after Watson struggled against Buffalo and received a negative reaction from the crowd. He initially described the boos as “disrespectful” and also mentioned fans cheering when he suffered an Achilles injury in 2024. His comments put even more pressure on a quarterback already working to rebuild his reputation in Cleveland.

Watson later addressed the issue and apologized when he spoke with reporters on Monday. He accepted responsibility for his reaction and acknowledged that his emotions affected what he said after the game.

“I thought I was going to get a little different response,” Watson said. He explained that his remarks were not meant as an attack on Browns fans and recognized why supporters have become frustrated with the team’s situation since his arrival.

The quarterback also acknowledged the $230 million investment Cleveland made when it acquired him in 2022. Injuries, missed time, and inconsistent results have prevented Watson from delivering the return many expected, while fans have continued waiting for the team to find stability at quarterback.

“I understand the frustration. I understand everything that kind of goes into that,” Watson said. He then made clear that his focus is now on football and producing the kind of play Cleveland expects from him.

Watson added that he feeds off the energy from the fans and the community, making his latest interaction with supporters especially relevant. Still, Frascella’s criticism shows that not everyone views the gesture as a simple attempt to reconnect.
