The Texas A&M Aggies are set to kick off their 2026 football season against the Missouri State Bears on Saturday at Kyle Field. In a significant tribute to the program's history, the university unveiled a statue honoring former head coach R.C. Slocum on Friday, just a day before the season opener.
R.C. Slocum, who led the Aggies from 1989 to 2002, is celebrated as the most successful coach in Texas A&M history. During his tenure, he amassed an impressive record of 123 wins, 47 losses, and 2 ties. His remarkable achievements include three consecutive Southwest Conference championships from 1991 to 1993 and a Big 12 title in 1998. Slocum's influence on the program is further underscored by his three-time selection as the SWC Coach of the Year, alongside his induction into both the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
The newly unveiled statue stands at 10 feet tall and is prominently located outside the north end of Kyle Field, adjacent to the All-American Towers. The sculpture, created by artist Steven White, serves as a lasting tribute to Slocum's legacy and his profound impact on Texas A&M football.
Current head coach Mike Elko expressed his enthusiasm about the statue during a recent press conference, emphasizing the importance of Slocum to the Aggies community. "To me, I view him as a legend. That's how I've always seen him," Elko stated. He continued to highlight Slocum's significance to the university and the football program, stating, "I have a ton of respect and admiration for who he is, and I want to make sure he knows he’s always welcomed around. This is his home. … He means so much to this university."
Slocum's contributions to Texas A&M extend beyond his coaching career. After stepping down as head coach, he remained involved with the university, serving as a special adviser to the president. He also took on the role of interim athletic director in both 2019 and 2024, further demonstrating his commitment to the institution.
