Why 4 NFL teams' preseason schedule puts them at disadvantage for roster cutdowns

This weekend will officially mark the end of the NFL's preseason. All 32 teams will get one last look at their fringe roster players trying to make a name for themselves and prove that they belong on their respective teams for the entire regular season. And had better make the most of their opportunities because NFL roster cutdown day is right around the corner. All 32 rosters must be cut down to 53 players by this Sunday evening.

But the players fighting for jobs and their livelihoods won't be the only ones facing extra tension on roster cutdown day. Because the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, and Tennessee Titans all play their preseason finales on Saturday — the rest of the league will be done by Friday night's end — that means all four organizations will have only roughly 24 hours or so to make their final roster decisions while factoring in their final preseason game.

That, dearest readers, is a really quick turnaround, to put it lightly. Almost unfair, too, but hey, that's the way the cookie crumbles with logistics sometimes. At least it's not a 24-hour turnaround between games (could you imagine?)

The scheduling for the final week of the preseason creates a disadvantage for some teams.

In the grand scheme of things, will this short turnaround matter all that much to the Bears, Lions, Colts, and Titans?

Probably not. Any franchise worth its salt likely already knows, more or less, who will be on its final 53-man roster before the last preseason game. The last exhibition is usually more about guys on the bubble simply proving they belong or showing they're worth a second look in the final evaluations. But it's not like there's a laundry list of players on the bubble at this point in the preseason. Far from it. Realistically speaking, they're deciding on maybe a handful of futures, at most.

We'll see how, if at all, this turnaround affects the Bears, Lions, Colts, and Titans.

All 32 NFL teams must have their final 53-man rosters set by 6:00 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, August 30th.
